Rather than taking the company’s word for it, request documentation that supports the HVAC specialist’s qualifications, licensing information and worker’s comp coverage. This information may even be available on the contractor’s website. Hint: If a contractor is hesitant to provide this, run the other direction.

4. Discuss your service need and request a detailed, written quote. While an HVAC company may be able to give you a ballpark figure on a repair or installation, most will want to view heating and cooling equipment in person and provide you with an on-site estimate. Go over the estimate in-depth to ensure that you understand what it covers—and what it doesn’t.
