The first step in fixing a leak is to find it. Windows and doors are obvious offenders. First, close a piece of paper into your window. If you can pull it out, the window is not sealed properly. On the Road with Green AC: Hong Kong Tests New, Solar-Powered Cooling System

In hot, humid locales like Hong Kong, air conditioning isn’t a luxury—it’s an imperative. Collaborating with partners like Green Power Industrial Ltd. and Swire Hong Kong, researchers at Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) have successfully developed a solar-powered commercial AC system that’s both eco-friendly and portable enough to be installed in large delivery trucks.

The state-of-the-art, sun-powered system was designed by Professor Eric Cheng of PolyU’s Department of Electrical Engineering. According to CanadianDriver.com, “the system features a photovoltaic panel attached to the roof of the truck’s cab, which collects solar energy to charge a specially made battery system.” The battery powers an electric motor and a frequency-driven compressor, creating a blast of cool air. Another nifty feature—the system is “stand-alone,” which means the vehicle doesn’t have to be running for the AC to work.

PolyU’s first, successful test case was a Coca-Cola beverage truck, and researchers are hopeful that the system will eventually be used to cool the entire Coca-Cola fleet. “We look forward to having more fruitful collaboration with Green Power Industrial Ltd and Swire Coca-Cola Hong Kong to build a low-carbon city,” said PolyU President and Professor Timothy W. Tong.
